Father

"Any man can be a father but it takes someone special to be a dad."

I recently read a great article. It was in regards to parenting and how you can fix your kid if you’ve already ruined him/her, etc. I don’t know about you, but every magazine, blog, or book on parenting has some type of perspective on how your child should be raised. After I failed the lovely quiz, I gave this magazine the benefit of the doubt and kept on reading to find an article called "35 things I hope my child says about me". I loved it. It made me think about my dad as I was growing up and what I would say about him today. These are a few of my favorite:

"He loved his family." He cared for his parents and loved having everyone together.

"He drove us nuts," If we slept in on Saturday morning, he turned on the light and vacuumed the rugs in our bedrooms anyways.

"He worked hard," He understood the value of a hard day’s work and wasn’t afraid of it. Many to-do lists found on the kitchen counters of our house.

"He loved eating meals together."
This was like a commandment in our house. It literally drove him CRAZY if we didn’t eat dinner together at the kitchen table.

I was a "daddy’s girl" growing up and still am. My dad didn’t ever really get or stay mad at me for very long – that’s what moms are for – but goodness if he was disappointed, boy that was hurtful. Thankfully, this did not happen too often and I was spoiled rotten. And when I broke up with that boyfriend who played for the Prince Albert Raiders, he knew to say the right thing: "We will just cheer for the Saskatoon Blades instead." My dad is a traditional man and I pleased him by following tradition – married a hockey player, married a hockey player in our Ukrainian catholic church, produced a couple of grand-kidlets, travelled bits of the world & settled in the perfect, quiet little neighborhood where the kids can ride their bikes safely & happy hours spent weekly with the neighbors.

Rod. You cannot tell Rod what or how to do ANYTHING. He is a bachelor who runs life on his own time. Believe you me, reverse psychology was invented because of my brother. This is something my dad is learning at a slower pace, as it is currently sinking in. But what these two don’t even realize, is how alike they really are. They both like things finished a certain way. They both have a love for the outdoors – fishing, boating, quading. They both have many, many friends – the more the merrier. They both are wonderful people you want to know or have in your life as they will have your back with a blink of an eye and love you more than life.
